Today is National Intern Day (who knew there was such a thing?!)! To celebrate, we've decided to let the interns take over our social media! They've been itching to take some of what they've learned and put it to good use... what better way than our social channels? So, follow along as they take you through the day in the life of an intern at Hileman Group!
Watch out – the interns are taking over!
But first, let's learn a little about them:
Gwendolyn Rose Brunot
Hometown: Akron, OH
Education (school, year, major(s)/minor(s)): I will be a (5th year, super) senior pursuing double majors of a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.F.A. in Graphic Design at The University of Akron.
Position at HG: I am the Creative Team intern at Hileman, so I work on visual design and UX (user experience) for websites and I also get to build sites in front-end development. I love my job here, because I get to create new things every day and learn a lot about design and web development.
What is a little known fact about you?: I am on The University of Akron Dance Team, which means I get to dance at all the football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games and continue to pursue my love of dance through college! (Go Zips!!!)
Coffee, Tea, or Nada? And why?: Both, but iced coffee is my go-to, because it gives me the energy to get through the day and it is delicious! I also love the teas from Starbucks, because they are so refreshing especially for summer.
What is your favorite quote? And why?: One of my favorite quotes is, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." — Henry Ford
This quote inspires me a lot in my life to never give up on any of my dreams or aspirations. I have learned that having a positive mindset and a good work ethic can take you really far. Sometimes quitting is the easy way out and I can say that there were times where I had to work very hard for things, but by putting in many hours of hard work, having a positive attitude, and being persistent I have achieved many of my life goals!
What is your favorite TV Show? And why?: Stranger Things, because I love the 80's and I really like the soundtrack and overall creepy and cool feeling the show has.
Who is your role model? And why?: My mom, because she is definitely the kindest, most giving, and wisest person I know and I can only hope to grow up to be the person she raised me to be and make her proud!
What is your favorite animal? And why?: I have two favorite animals and they are my dogs. I call them my children.
Hometown: Cleveland, OH
Education (school, year, major(s)/minor(s)): I recently graduated from Wake Forest University with a B.A. in Communication and a minor in Psychology.
Position at HG: Digital Marketing Intern
What is a little known fact about you?: I watched a bullfight in Madrid, Spain which was simultaneously shocking and captivating.
Coffee, Tea, or Nada? And why?: Both. I’m obsessed with vanilla lattes, but I also love black tea with cream.
What is your favorite quote? And why?: One of my favorite quotes is from the movie Finding Forrester, "No thinking – that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is… to write, not to think!"
This line is definitely a little cheesy, but growing up my dad would always quote this to my sisters and me when we would be stressed out about assignments or other activities in our life. This quote reminds me not to overthink or worry about making a mistake, but rather to learn by jumping in and working hard; then using that knowledge to make changes and grow.
What is your favorite TV Show? And why?: Parks and Rec. This show never fails to make me laugh, Ron Swanson is always quotable. I love the depth of each character and how unique they are, plus the general setting as the Parks and Recreation office for the city is also hilarious.
Who is your role model? And why?: My role model is my older sister; she is two years older than me and has always been someone to look up to and learn from. She cares about people deeply and will go the extra mile for both friends and family, teaching me the value of loyalty, honesty, and kindness. She has always looked out for me, since we were kids going to sports camp together, till now as we embark on our post-grad careers. My sister always has a word of advice, but also always gives me the space to grow and work hard on my own. I am lucky to have her in my life.
What is your favorite animal? And why?: I’m tied between capybaras and chinchillas. I love chinchilla videos and follow way too many accounts on Instagram, and I think capybaras are fascinating (they’re the largest rodents and look like giant guinea pigs) and the memes are amazing.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
Education (school, year, major(s)/minor(s)): The University of Akron, Senior, Integrated Marketing Communications and Marketing Management double major.
Position at HG: Account Management Intern
What is a little known fact about you?: I am the president and beat boxer of Kanga Blue a Cappella, the University of Akron's ONLY all-female a cappella group!
Coffee, Tea, or Nada? And why?: Both! It definitely depends on the season and the time of day. I rely on my morning cup of coffee to get the day going, but I also really enjoy green tea or iced coffee throughout the day. I love the Starbucks Very Berry Hibiscus or Strawberry Acai Refresher Teas with coconut milk and I prefer Dunkin' Donuts Caramel Iced Coffee as a midday pick-me-up.
What is your favorite quote? And why?: I think I have two favorite quotes. The first one is from the Bible, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
This is one of many bible verses that grounds me when I feel stressed out or worried.
My second favorite quote is, "You can't have a million-dollar dream with a minimum wage work ethic." (Stephen C. Hogan)
I heard this whenever I was just beginning my college career. If you want something, you have to put in the work to earn it.
What is your favorite TV Show? And why?: I am really into The Handmaid’s Tale right now, which is a Hulu Original. This show portrays an intricate and mind-numbing concept. It is so well thought out and the acting is phenomenal. The emotions captured feel so raw and real. Sometimes the scenes are so graphic and seem so real that I have a hard time watching them. I almost feel as if I am a part of the cast when I binge-watch for too long. I would highly suggest this series (to an age appropriate audience of course)!
Who is your role model? And why?: My mom is my number one role model. Of course, there are so many successful people that I could look up to, but my mom has always set the best example. She is kind and patient, but she isn't a pushover. She is one of the hardest workers I have ever met and there isn't any problem too big for her to conquer. She knows how to tell it like it is, without being mean or hurtful. She inspires me to push myself and reminds me of my gravity. She continues to encourage me to be the best version of myself. I guess that is probably why "Make Your Mom Proud" is one of my favorite core values at Hileman Group.
What is your favorite animal? And why?: I am obsessed with elephants. They are such gentle giants and they're so cute! Especially baby elephants, they're just plain adorable.
Sarah Catherine Selzer
Hometown: Perrysburg, OH
Education (school, year, major(s)/minor(s)): Bowling Green State University – Fifth year, Visual Communication Technology / Marketing
Position at HG: Web Marketing Intern
What is a little known fact about you?: I've been sewing since I was 5 years old (I designed and made both of my prom dresses) and I love to bake pie.
Coffee, Tea, or Nada? And why?: Tea. I studied abroad in the UK and my second day there I was taught how to make a "proper cup of tea". I now drink Lady Grey tea scalding hot with milk, no sugar.
What is your favorite quote? And why?: "Fear not little flock." – Jesus (the Bible, Luke 12:32)
I love the simplicity of this verse. As a planner personality and involved student, I often worry if everything will work out as I want it to and if I will have enough time in the day to get things done. This quote however is a great reminder that I have a God who is wiser and more powerful than me, who is ultimately in control, and that I don't have to fret so much. Also, after living in Wales and walking past fields of sheep every day to get to school, I have a very warm place in my heart for these fluffy creatures.
What is your favorite TV Show? And why?: NCIS . Season 11 Bishop is who I am as a person. You can catch me snacking at all times of day and doing my best work sitting crosslegged on the floor. Plus with Abby, Gibbs, Ducky, and Ziva, all the characters are just top-notch.
Who is your role model? And why?: Emma Watson. I loved her portrayal as Hermione, and now as an adult I'm inspired by her work with the UN Leading efforts in women's and human rights.
What is your favorite animal? And why?: Pygmy goats. They are the cutest little things: you can put them in sweaters and you can do yoga with them. As a child, my mom told me I couldn't keep one in my bedroom as a pet, so I settle for visiting them at our county fair.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
Education (school, year, major(s)/minor(s)): I will graduate with a B.S. in Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University in December this year.
Position at HG: I'm the Technology Team Intern. That means I work on the back-end parts of projects, mostly working on custom website functionality for our clients.
What is a little known fact about you?: I write electronic music! My style can be a little all over the place but it's rooted in EDM, Hip Hop, and a microgenre called 'wave'. Catch n8m8 on Spotify, Apple Music, or pretty much anywhere else. Especially SoundCloud if you want to hear my bootleg remixes.
Coffee, Tea, or Nada? And why?: Most days, I drink a full fresh press worth of coffee. Do I have a problem? I did a low carb diet for a while, and my go-to at Starbucks is still an Iced Coffee, light heavy cream, sugar free vanilla.
What is your favorite quote? And why?: My favorite quote is "Life is made of small moments like these."
It's from the musicians Above & Beyond. I'm not sure that they even came up with it themselves, I think they heard if from a fan and started using it a lot. I like it because sometimes it's easy to lose yourself in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and you should remember that a lot of the time, what makes you happy are all the little things. I also like that it implies our lives and the way we are is really the culmination of hundreds of millions of seconds, of learning, and interaction with others.
What is your favorite TV Show? And why?: I don't watch a ton of TV, but It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been a staple in my circle of friends for years. I've probably watched most of the episodes three times. The characters are completely self-unaware of how terrible of people they are, and that concept results in some of the funniest moments I've seen. It's a shame they took it off Netflix.
Who is your role model? And why?: I really try to pull personal inspiration from a variety of successful people (that's the best way to learn!), but if I had to pick one person it would be the Youtuber Philip DeFranco. He has been making news content on the platform for over 10 years, making content focused on showing all sides of the story, while explicitly expressing his opinion, asking others to give their opinion to open a discussion. Not only do I look up to his value of transparency and honesty, but he is working pretty much all the time to be successful. I like that.
What is your favorite animal? And why?: I've been seeing a lot of Panda videos online lately, and they are just too funny.
Take a break from your day and follow them on Twitter and Instagram!
